Vale of Clywd AM delighted at A55 success

Vale of Clwyd AM, Ann Jones, has spoke of her delight at the news that her campaign for enhanced road safety on the A55 has been successful.

After continued and tenacious lobbying from Ann Jones, the Transport Minister, Ieuan Wyn Jones, has announced that a crawler lane will be developed on the Rhuallt Hill.

The Deputy First Minister is also planning to extend the rapid response pilot scheme which has, until now, been concentrated on the Conwy Tunnels section of the 80 mile stretch.

These measures match exactly the suggestions Ann Jones made in several meetings with the Minister. Mrs Jones also lead an Assembly debate dedicated to Road Safety during which she reiterated her calls for a crawler lane and an extension of the rapid response pilot project

Ann Jones AM said:

“I am relieved that the Minister has listened to my concerns. The Rhuallt Hill is not as safe as it could or should be as things stand.

“Since spending a day on the A55 with the police earlier this year I was all the more convinced that action was needed. The pilot scheme should, in my view, have skipped the pilot stage. We know the scheme works as it has done in other parts of the UK for several years now.

“I hope this will lead to a safer A55 for all its users. As I have continually said, whilst campaigning on this issue, the A55 is a route of genuine strategic importance; we cannot afford to put these projects off, so this announcement is really good news for all concerned.”
