Tory position on Welsh devolution “unravelling”

As the Tory position on devolution unravelled, Welsh Labour has today challenged Nick Bourne and David Cameron to publish in full the report from Lord Wyn Roberts.

The call for the release of the report, which was due to be released earlier this summer came following an announcement by Tory MP for Monmouth David Davies that he will lead a ‘No’ campaign in any future referendum on whether or not the National Assembly for Wales should be granted primary law-making powers.

Wrexham Labour AM Lesley Griffiths has reiterated her call for the Welsh Tories to publicly reveal Lord Roberts’ conclusions.

Lesley Griffiths AM said:

“The Tories say they’ve changed, but on issue after issue the mask is slipping. They say they are on the side of hard-working people but then propose a massive tax-cut for millionaires. They talk tough on crime, but then vote against measures to keep our streets safe.

“On devolution they promised us strong leadership and a clear position now they are ducking and diving. The report from Lord Roberts is on David Cameron’s desk. The process is now over – so let the Welsh people know what the Tory position is.

“But today, David Davies may well have let the cat out of the bag, having announced that he will lead a ‘No’ campaign in a future referendum on whether or not the National Assembly should be granted full law making powers. Does Cameron support him? Does Nick Bourne support him?

“Last summer, Welsh Labour agreed by an overwhelming majority at its special conference, to establish the All Wales Convention to look into the possibility of holding a referendum on law-making powers for the National Assembly. We are delivering on our promises to the people of Wales in an open and transparent way. The same cannot be said of David Cameron’s Tory Party.

“On issue after issue the Tories are showing they can’t be trusted. They say one thing, but then do another. The people of Wales now need to know precisely where the Tories stand on devolution and on the future governance of our country. The only way to do that is to make public the Roberts Report. If they fail to do this, voters will draw their own conclusions about Tory secrecy.”
