Rhodri Morgan and Paul Murphy welcome appointment of Mervyn Davies as Trade Minister

Labour’s First Minister for Wales Rhodri Morgan and Welsh Secretary Paul Murphy have today welcomed the appointment of Mervyn Davies as the UK Government’s new Trade and Investment Minister.

Mervyn Davies CBE, who was born in Abersoch in North Wales and is a fluent Welsh speaker, has been appointed by the Prime Minister as a Minister of State at the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He will become a member of the House of Lords.

First Minister Rhodri Morgan said:

“Mervyn Davies’ unique experience as previously Chief Executive and latterly Chairman of Standard Chartered Bank will give him the ability to offer invaluable advice and insight to help the Government deal with the current banking and economic crisis, as well as promoting trade and investment at this crucial time.

“In my experience of meeting and hearing Mervyn in his job with Standard Chartered and more widely, I know he is a very proud Welshman as well as a figure of the highest possible standing in global banking circles. He is a major acquisition to the Government ranks.”

Welsh Secretary Paul Murphy added:

“I very much welcome Mervyn Davies to Government. As well as an extra Welsh voice, his vast experience in the business world will be of great value to us in Government and to our country.”
