Harrow Road councillors to show Westminster Council’s chief executive how a good estate should be run

Harrow Road’s three Labour Councillors Ruth Bush, Guthrie McKie and Sharan Tabari will be taking City Council Chief Executive Mike More on a tour of the Walterton and Elgin Estate run by Walterton and Elgin Community Homes (WECH) on December 4th. WECH was founded by local residents who successfully took over the running of their estate from Westminster City Council in the early 1990s following the ‘Homes for Votes’ scandal. Labour say that the excellent way in which the WECH estate is run, involving local residents, should provide a model for other estates in Westminster.

Councillor Guthrie McKie, Labour’s Housing spokesman said:

“We have arranged for the Chief Executive, Mike More, to visit the WECH Estate on Thursday December 4th from 9 – 11am. This will show him how an estate can be well managed, with no vandalism or graffiti. He will also be shown recent conversions that will provide good flats at affordable rents. No doubt he will meet residents and staff members. The involvement of residents in the running of the estate will be another facet of the visit.”
