Highest vote ever for Labour in Hyde Park ward by-election

Labour scored its highest vote ever in the Hyde Park Ward in yesterday’s by-election caused by the resignation of former Council Leader Colin Barrow.

Jack Gordon’s 563 votes secured second place for Labour in Shirley Porter’s former stronghold and his vote was more than the combined votes of the Greens (182), Liberal Democrats (178), UKIP (96) and Independent (40) candidates. The Conservatives won the ward with 1,448 votes.

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said;

“Jack Gordon’s record vote was a huge success for Labour and shows what can be achieved with a candidate who is in touch with local community concerns who is known and respected widely in the local area. Jack’s team worked hard to get this result and their success is well-deserved. I am sure that Jack will build on his good work over the next two years and put up an even stronger challenge in 2014.”
