Just 74 new affordable homes built in Westminster in 2007/08

Westminster’s Labour Councillors have slated Westminster Conservatives’ affordable homes record after the latest Council survey shows that of the 683 residential units which were built in Westminster between April 2007 and March 2008, only 74 (11%) of these were affordable units.

Labour say that, with many hundreds of local families living in overcrowded accommodation, the Conservatives are making it even harder for low and middle income families to find decent accommodation in central London. Labour say that the Council’s practice of accepting cash in lieu of on-site affordable housing is only acting to fuel the local housing crisis.

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said:

“Westminster Conservatives are failing families in housing need. With just 74 affordable homes built in Westminster last year, the Conservatives have demonstrated their zero commitment towards the poor and those on low or middle incomes. The Westminster Conservatives have a long and well-known history of manipulating housing policy to meet their own political ends and their current abysmal affordable housing record shows that they are still up to their old same tricks.”
