Labour call for action on long-vacant Edgware Road site

Labour Church Street Councillors Barbara Grahame and Aziz Toki have called on Westminster City Council to start Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) proceedings to acquire the long-vacant site at the corner of Edgware Road and Church Street in order that it can be used to build more affordable homes and improve shopping facilities for Church Street and Little Venice residents.

Councillors Grahame and Toki said that the site, which has been derelict and vacant for 20 years, could be used to build more homes for local residents in housing need, together with new community and shopping facilities.

Councillor Barbara Grahame said:

“With the Council announcing a new Church Street Action Plan this is the ideal time to start CPO proceedings so that this site can contribute to meeting the needs of the Church Street area by providing more new affordable homes and new community facilities. The Council says that it wants to knock down some of the existing homes in Church Street to make way for new people. It makes no sense to knock down existing homes when there is a massive vacant site literally across the road! The sooner the Council gets moving to bring this vacant site into use the better for everyone.”

Councillor Aziz Toki said:

“It is a disgrace that the Council has allowed this site to remain unused and vacant for 20 years. If it was in Mayfair or Belgravia the Conservatives would not have tolerated it to be left to blight the area for so long. If the Church Street Action Plan is to have any credibility than this long-vacant site must be included and action needs to be taken now.”
