With the City Council elections just a few week’s away, Labour’s has unveiled its six promises for a Fairer Westminster.
* Fairer Parking – we will cut the cost of a Residents’ Parking Permit by £10 a year and scrap the motorbike parking charges which have been so controversial and divisive.
* New homes – we will build new affordable homes for local families in all parts of Westminster. We will take tough action against illegal sub-letting and residents responsible for anti-social behaviour.
* Safer streets – we will crack down on anti-social behaviour, knife crime and dangerous dogs by closer working with the Police.
* Cutting out waste – we will make sure your money is spent on front-line services by cutting waste and unnecessary spending on staff bonuses, the civic dinner and publicity.
* Safer roads – we will consult residents on introducing a 20 mph speed limit in residential areas to cut deaths and serious injuries on the roads.
* A greener Westminster – we will increase re-cycling and e–car charging points all over Westminster. We will take rapid action on fly-tipping, graffiti and dog mess. We will restore the free bulky rubbish collection service.
Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said: “Labour is on the side of local residents. Our programme is practical, sensible and affordable. Westminster is the richest council in the country – yet under the Conservatives:
* Homes have been left empty all over Westminster while many families are living in overcrowded conditions.
* City Guardians slashed – 60 jobs axed on vital front-line services to fight crime and tackle anti-social behaviour.
* Millions wasted on spin and consultants – over £3 million a year spent on self-congratulatory publicity and ’spin’.
* Charges are up – for school meals, for parking, and now you have to pay for bulky refuse collection.
* Financial blunders have cost residents millions of pounds – like the £17 million invested in now-failed Icelandic banks.
* Scant concern for the environment – The complacent Conservatives refused to join the 10:10 campaign to cut carbon emissions.
“It is time for a big change at Westminster City Council.”
