Mean-minded Tory Westminster offers meagre assistance to householders in difficulty

Westminster Conservatives are contributing just £30,000 to the Government’s mortgage rescue scheme – only a third of the amount being made available by the Government in this year’s Budget.

Under the new Government scheme the money would be made available to householders to assist them in the event of their homes being at risk for non payment of mortgages. The Government said this money would be channelled through local authorities who would be encouraged to match the funding given to householders.

The Government has given Westminster City Council £85,000 for the year 2009/10, yet Westminster Conservatives are only contributing £30,000 towards this rescue package. Many householders, often with the Council’s encouragement, took out large mortgages due to the high property prices in Westminster.

Harrow Road Labour Councillor Guthrie McKie says:

“When Westminster Council unveiled its so-called ‘Economic Recovery Plan’ with its usual expensive spin, many of us were doubtful that this would have much in it. Now we know that help to homeowners at a very difficult time is nothing more than hot air. The Icelandic Bank fiasco still haunts this Council. The loss of £17million has damaged the Council’s ability to provide support for the most vulnerable residents.”
