Two Westminster City Council Officers earn more than the Prime Minister

Two Westminster City Council Officers earn more than the Prime Minister, according to figures released by the Council, with a further 20 senior Council officers earning over £100,000 a year. Yet, Westminster Conservatives have done nothing to rein in top pay at a time when the Government is calling on the Council to make £52 million of service cuts over the next two years, including sacking 250 more staff. At next Monday’s Cabinet meeting the Conservatives are expected to rubber stamp proposals to take away care services from 3,000 vulnerable adults as part of plans to slash £8.4 million from the Adult Care budget.

Speaking at Westminster City Council’s Old Marylebone Town Hall on 24th November 2010, Conservative Housing Minister Grant Shapps MP said: “Quite frankly I still think some chief exec salaries are too high… Some people seem to think it’s a tougher job to run a local council than to run the country. How else could they justify being paid more than the PM?”

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said: “Even Government Ministers believe that Westminster Conservatives have got their priorities wrong. They say “we’re all in this together”, but for some people it is “business as usual” while the most vulnerable bear the brunt of the cuts.”
