Westminster City Council writes off debts of £20million

Westminster City Council wrote off debts of £20,600,000 in 2009/10, the highest in London, according to a survey of London Boroughs conducted by the Evening Standard. This compares with neighbouring Kensington & Chelsea Council which wrote off debts of just £596,000 and Tower Hamlets which wrote off £1.76 million of debt.

This week, Westminster Council revealed that it had axed over 1,000 jobs over the past two years because of financial problems and Government cuts.

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said; “Westminster Conservatives’ financial mismanagement has resulted in the Council failing to collect more than £20 million that it is owed. At the same time, over 1,000 jobs have been axed, half of them doing frontline jobs dealing with the elderly, young and vulnerable. The connection between the Council’s financial incompetence and this huge loss of jobs is clear and very obvious.”
