Westminster Conservatives axed over 1,000 jobs in two years

Westminster Conservatives have axed 1,020 jobs over the past two years, following a ‘Made in Westminster’ financial disaster in 2009/10 which saw the Council’s parking income fall by £20 million and a £60 million cuts programme instigated by the Council following the election of the Conservative-led Government in May 2010.

So far the Council has been through five phases of redundancies and job deletions, with a sixth phase of job cuts scheduled for October 2011. To date there have been 694 establishment posts deleted and an additional 326 redundancy posts.

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said; “Westminster’s ‘jobs destruction programme’ has so far claimed over 1,000 victims and has impoverished Council services right across the board. No service has been immune from the axe, with half the axed jobs coming from staff dealing with front-line public services. Like elsewhere in the economy, these cuts have been too deep and too fast and the impact on the economy has been devastating.

“The Government claims that axed Council jobs will be replaced by new private sector jobs. But the facts are very different. Getting a job in Westminster North has got a great deal more difficult over the past year, according to Government figures, with 38 unemployed people chasing every Job Centre vacancy in June 2011, compared with 12 people for every Job Centre vacancy in May 2010.”
