Westminster Council breaks requirement to publish spending details

Westminster City Council has failed to post details of all Council expenditure over £500 on the Council’s website since September 2010, as it is required to do by law. And Labour Councillors say that the information posted so far on the Council’s website, from April to September 2010, is not at all helpful as it simply lists the amounts paid by the Council to suppliers and gives no information as to what the Council spent the money on.

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said: “Not only is the Council in breach of the the law by not posting this financial information on its website for over three months, but the information posted so far is of little help to residents as it gives no indication as to what services or goods were received for these payments. The Council’s claim to be opening up its finances for public scrutiny is totally bogus and posting the bare details of payments on their own is of little use to anyone wanting to assess whether the Council is getting value for money. If the Council wants to ‘open its books’ to the public then it will need to try a lot harder.”
