Westminster Labour call for David Cameron to denounce slap-up dinner on the rates for Conservative Councillors who lost £17 million investing in now-failed Icelandic Banks.
Labour Councillors in Westminster have blasted Westminster Conservatives for going ahead with a £23,000 Black-Tie Civic Dinner at Lancaster House, St James’s on Sunday 22nd March. Labour Councillors say that spending £23,000 on a Civic Dinner is totally unacceptable at a time when the Council is cutting 200 jobs and is still reeling from the loss of £17 million invested in now-failed Icelandic Banks.
Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said:
“Westminster Conservatives are completely out of touch with the reality of life in 2009. These are tough economic times and spending £23,000 of the Council’s taxpayers’ money on a lavish black-tie dinner for diplomats, mayors and other dignitaries is total madness at a time when many Westminster residents are losing their jobs and homes. Westminster Conservatives claim that despite losing £17 million in now-failed Icelandic Banks it is still ‘business as usual’ at the Council. It looks more like ’snouts in the trough, as usual’. I call on David Cameron to denounce this unjustified waste of public money by Westminster Conservatives.”
