Westminster’s Labour Councillors have slammed the Mayor’s proposal to cut the time pedestrians have to cross the road at traffic light junctions by reducing the time that the ‘green man’ is on display.
Labour say that the Mayor’s plan to ‘improve traffic flow’ by reducing the time pedestrians have to cross the road at busy junctions is bad news for children, the elderly and people with disabilities. Labour Councillors say that they are not against the introduction of ‘digital countdown signs’ but that these should not be used as an excuse for cutting the time that pedestrians have to cross the road.
Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group said:
“Westminster has some of the busiest streets and most dangerous junctions in the world and for the Mayor to suggest that pedestrians should have less time to cross the road is totally irresponsible. It is already difficult to cross many busy roads in all parts of Westminster and cutting the time that the elderly, children and the disabled have to cross the road will inevitably lead to more accidents.”
