Labour Councillors in Westminster have welcomed the news that local councils will be handed new powers to introduce 20mph speed-limit zones in residential areas under Government proposals, following a report which showed the number of road injuries in London within restricted zones fell by 40% over ten years.
Under current rules, councils can only introduce 20mph limits with speed humps and other traffic calming measures. However, the new Government proposals will allow local authorities to implement the safer restriction zones in residential streets where cycle and pedestrian traffic is high.
Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group said: “All the evidence shows that 20mph zones can make a real difference to the safety of local roads. Westminster City Council has repeatedly said that more speed humps are not the answer but they have new powers to increase safety by introducing a 20 mph speed limit.”
“We welcome these new powers to increase road safety and we will be calling on the Council to introduce 20 mph zones in residential streets throughout Westminster.”
