Westminster Tories axe £9.2 million Marylebone adult education centre

Meanwhile, Conservatives claim they have no money but announce £40 million spending on seven West End road projects.

Westminster Conservatives have axed a proposed new £9.2 million Adult Education Centre in Moxon Street, Marylebone claiming that they do not have the money yet, on the same day, they announced a new £40 million plan for seven road improvement schemes, including a new road system around Piccadilly Circus.

Labour Councillors say that the Conservative priority is to spend scarce public money on high profile “headline-grabbing” West End projects at the expense of services or local residents such as adult education.

Last month the Conservatives spent £2.1 million re-opening the Marble Arch fountains, yet a mile away in Broadley Street in Church Street Ward, one of the only public gardens in a densely populated area is closed and boarded up because the Conservatives claim they have no money to improve the gardens.

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said:

“Once again, the Conservatives are spending money on projects which bring little benefit to local residents. Axing the Adult Education Centre will hit local residents hard, particularly those who want to improve their qualifications and basic skills. The Conservatives care more about West End roads and fountains than they do about local residents.”
