Westminster Tories should lobby against massive rent rise for Council tenants

Westminster Labour Councillors have called on Council Leader Colin Barrow and Housing Cabinet member Philippa Roe to mount a campaign to reduce the proposed 6.8% rent increase for Council tenants, announced by the Government last week.

Labour say that the proposed Council house rent increase is higher than the proposed 6.2% increase proposed last year which Conservative Councillors campaigned against and which was subsequently halved following pressure from Labour MPs led by Karen Buck.

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said: “The proposed 6.8% rent increase will hit many Council tenants very hard, particularly as Westminster already charges some of the highest rents in the country. It is vital that Councillor Barrow and Councillor Roe use their influence with their friends in Government to get this unjustified rent increase reduced to a more sensible and affordable level. Over the past few months Councillor Roe has been bombarding Government Ministers with letters trying to reduce Westminster’s housing responsibilities. Now it is time for her to lobby Government Ministers on something that will affect every one of Westminster’s 12,000 Council tenants.”
